As I learn Korean, you can too! I'll post my translations of songs and random articles to help me and you learn Korean. As my (obvious) bias is SM, their songs will take precedence.
I am also assuming you can pronounce and read Hangul characters. If you need a refreshers, just open this guide in another tab.
Since I am not fluent in Korean and am mostly self-taught, there will be errors (though not intentional). If you see an error please let me! Just tell me (1) where my error is, (2) why it's wrong, and (3) how you think I should correct it.
Also, I will sometimes post self-written English lyrics under "Let's Sing Together." If you use the lyrics, feel free to send me a link to your cover!
Like any language, some words have multiple meanings. I will only post the most relevant meaning(s).
English Rating: I will give each song an English rating based on it's grammar and pronunciation. If the lyrics from music.naver.com indicate a word is written in English, I will judge it against a native English speaker's pronunciation. If the word is a borrowed word and is written in Hangul, it will not be judged.
0 - 3 / 10: The English pronunciation is done poorly. Upon first listen, it is difficult or impossible to tell what the singer is saying. Also/Or the grammar and sentence structure (and possibly, word choice) render the English phrase nonsensical.
4 - 7 / 10: The English pronunciation is understandable, but still contains a strong Korean accent. It is sometimes difficult to understand upon a first listen. Also/Or the grammar and sentence structure is off, but the sentence or phrase is still clear.
8 - 10 / 10: The English pronunciation sounds (nearly) native with barely any or no Korean accent. It is easy to understand upon a first listen. Also/Or the grammar and sentence structure is correct.
Translation Difficulty Rating: I will also give each song a Translation Difficulty rating based on how hard it is to translate. The lower scores indicate that I can understand the song without having to look much up. The higher scores indicate I have struggled with translating (sections or the entire song).
0 - 2 / 10: The song was easy to translate. It uses mostly common Korean words and simple grammar. I had to look up nothing or only a few words/grammar points to complete the translation. Beginners will have an easy time understanding the song.
I am confidant in the translation's accuracy.
3 - 5 / 10: The song was fairly easy to translate. It uses mostly common Korean words and simple grammar, but there are still a few uncommon or difficult words or grammar points.
I am pretty certain of the translation's accuracy, but there are bound to be one or two mistakes.
6 - 8 / 10; The song was difficult to translate. It uses a lot of uncommon Korean words and more advanced grammar patterns. I struggled to understand most of the parts of the song. Beginners will not understand most of the song.
I am unsure of the translation's accuracy. Some sections are fine, but others are just an educated guess.
9 - 10 / 10: I'm stumped! I had to cave in and ask an 언니 or 오빠 about the grammar and they ended up wondering why I was so in over my head.
I am confidant the translation will have many mistakes. Please take it with a grain of salt! But it was a fun learning experience...
For songs with a 6 - 10 / 10 rating, I will be continuing the "10 Words". For songs with a 0 - 5 / 10 rating, I will have a section, "Words to Know".
